Hey, tonight on The Shaun Proulx Show on OutTV (7:30 EST) it’s a cornucopia of guests -enough to make you gag: Lisa Lampanelli, Dragonette, the awesome, awesome Leslie Jordan, and an icon we call Carol Channing.
It was an interesting experience to interview the legendary Carol Channing. When I first announced we were going to be having her on the show, fags everywhere Facebooked and Tweeted that I absolutely had to get her to address the anti-gay remarks she made in 2006, the ones that garnered the devout Christian some none-too-pretty international media, and the wrath of former fag friends everywhere.
I understand why people would want me to address this matter – and I wanted to ask. As far as I can tell, I am the first gay in the media to ask her about the issue that inspired such queer backlash. But Channing, as you’ll be able to really tell from our talk, is now a batty old woman, and getting older fast. It doesn’t excuse the fact she made the remarks she made, but when push comes to shove I’m not the guy who feels like challenging a fading person like her. So you’ll see me kind of trying to get the issue in, softly, out of duty, and you’ll see that eventually she seems confused, asking if she ever said anything wrong.
I didn’t push it.
Old? Shrewd? Both? We’ll never know.
The good news is she does sing during the interview. I know. Like, a whole song.
