Yesterday’s post, Forgiving Chris Brown, received many comments here, and on my Twitter and Facebook.

Melissa tweeted, ”Hv nt seen CB b repentant bout anything other thn how it affected him. Ans quests with class, be stand up in ev way, then maybe”.

“Answer questions with class, be stand up in every way”; her feelings seemed similar to Lisa’s, who commented that Chris Brown “always appears so angry and volatile, never remorseful and humble”.

Robyn noted Brown was only 3 years into his 5 years probation:  ”He hasn’t yet paid his debt to society.”

Rhett commented, “They don’t see him showing his remorse by making PSA’s in support of domestic abuse centers or hot lines.”

Do I understand these feelings and the emotion behind them? Absolutely. But as I read Melissa’s tweet to me, I wondered: how would she define being “stand up in every way”; how many different versions of that must there be, given the millions Chris Brown repulsed. What would make us all feel better about this ugly mess (better enough to maybe even forgive)? Continue Reading…

Forgiving Chris Brown

Did you see the Grammy’s last night? I thought they helped take our minds off of the death of Whitney, music as balm after a loss to music. Earlier in the show, I was tweeting. Tweeting I loved how LL Cool J led a prayer and how he was acing it as host, tweeting asking my followers what Coldplay song they loved most, who they thought was best/worst dressed, and did we like RiRi’s hair blonde (no)?

Then Chris Brown performed. I could feel the energy shift upon his appearance. Has there been a celebrity more divisive since OJ Simpson? Guilty, but pretty much got away with it, but then again not really because many of the general public still calls him on what he did. Many are especially sickened by those who don’t feel similar disgust, especially those adoring fans who seemingly, screamingly, love him more because he did what he did.

It’s hard to stomach. When I first heard Rihanna had been beaten and threatened with her life at the hands of Brown, I was as repulsed as I would have been if she were an every-woman, and then more repulsed because she was my RiRi – what kind of monster could hurt a girl who had brought me such pleasure?

So when Brown took to the stage, I took to Twitter:

I know some who are Tweeting phone numbers of abuse shelters throughout Chris Brown’s performance. Does he deserves a break from his past? Continue Reading…

Wasn't That A Party?

Last post as a single gal!

I’m outta here tomorrow and by the time I’m back to reality a ball and chain will be attached to my ankle a ring’ll be on mah finger.

Getting married is a heady, exciting experience – I can see why people do it over and over again.

One highlight I will always remember is my younger brothers Andre and Mark taking Eddie and I out for a bachelor bash this past Friday. It can’t be that easy to take your gay big brother and his porn star fiance out to get trashed; Continue Reading…

Shocking Wedding Secrets – Revealed!

Image: Shaun Proulx Media

So it seems, with 11 days to go until I get married, that I have a couple of things in common with new bride Kim Kardashian.

The first is that my wedding affair also has a black and white dress code.  Eddie and I chose it at the start of our planning (god that feels like eons ago).  Our intention for our celebration is ease for all; who doesn’t have black and white in their wardrobe already?  Plus we know it will make for some hot photos.  Basically what I’m trying to say is the black and white thing was our idea, long before KK was even engaged to the man who shares the same name as her mother.

The second commonality is a revelation both Kim and I have made to our grooms-to-be, one that seems to have taken them both aback.

Sunday we had E! on and they ran a clip of Kris (the fiance, not the mum) in abject shock after finding out Kim had once been married.  Kim defended herself, explaining it was a silly mistake from her teen years.

Eddie was in the kitchen at the time.  ”God, can you imagine?”

I also defended Kim.  ”She was a teenager for Pete’s sake. Do you want to tell me every stupid thing you did at that age before we get married?”

Breakfast was served.

That afternoon, in a grocery store line up, Kim was smiling up at us from a tabloid, dressed in her wedding gown (mine’s way better, but I digress).

“Do you think they made that up for the show?” Eddie asked.

At this point in our relationship we’re at the stage where we are psychically connected, Eddie and I.  We know the end of sentences just started, and when he asked this question in the lineup I knew he was referring back to the clip we’d seen in the morning of a Mr. Kardashian-to-be shocked that Kim had already been married once.

“I’m sure he exaggerated how stunned he was for TV, of course,” I said as we cashed out.

“36.82,” said the cashier, putting our groceries into bags.

“What do you mean, “exaggerated of course”?” Eddie asked. “Why are you defending her?” Continue Reading…

CLASSIC HIMBO! Unbearable Body Fascism

I’m on holiday until next week, but enjoy this HIMBO! classic, originally posted January 12, 2011.

***

I can’t stop talking about Portia De Rossi‘s memoir of anorexia, which I devoured over the holidays to my surprise.  I didn’t expect to be interested in the topic or the writer enough, except something was so compelling to me when De Rossi went on Oprah to discuss her project.

The woman who married Ellen is a strong writer, and she tells her tale from within the grip of anorexia. In other words, you get to clearly understand the mind-fuck she gave herself in her quest to be ‘professional’, ‘perfect’, ‘employable’ and so on.

Suddenly a book I was enjoying simply because of De Rossi’s excellent storytelling started to sound  familiar.  Continue Reading…

Happy Birthday To A Hero

If you know me one iota, you know that even though I’ve spent all morning in a workshop and the work has piled, I’m not letting the day go by without saying HAPPY BIRTHDAY MADONNA! - as I sit here in my ‘Everyone Is A Star’ tee from the ReInvention tour.

You are a lifeforce who has been such an inspiration!  Continue Reading…
