Family Day

A few years ago here in Ontario, the provincial government declared today Family Day and many of us in the province have the day off.  Essentially it began as simply a way to insert a long-weekend into the mix right when the drudgery of Canadian winter was beginning to drive us all bonkers.

When the raison d’etre of this new day off was announced, I thought little of it except that calling it ‘Family Day’ was probably the best, broadest ‘celebration’ that could appeal to the masses, although I wondered how many people would actually celebrate their families and also wondered why they didn’t just call it Shaun Proulx Day.

This year though I am appreciating my family greatly, in a way I haven’t before.  Continue Reading…

VD For Everyone!

Men's Department: Holt Renfrew (Toronto) / Photo: Shaun Proulx Media

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I took the above photo the other day in Holt Renfrew in their men’s department.  I just loved that this Valentine’s display featured two gay men – wow, we’ve come along way. Sure HR knows it’s customer, but still – I feel the love Holt’s!

I also felt the love when Eddie stripped down in the icy temperatures the other day to create a video in an attempt to prove himself to be The Coldest Canadian and win a trip for two for us to New Zealand.  You can watch it here, and also share it from there on your Facebook and Twitter and sign up to vote if you wish.  He’s two weeks late entering, but I love him for trying!

And if you’re looking for a way to express your love for someone this year and don’t feel like the traditional route of flowers, candy, or a dinner in a crowded restaurant, I got the okay from Eddie to share what I did for him this year with you.  It’s quick and easy and fun and he really appreciated it.  We actually celebrated Valentine’s Day yesterday, given we were hanging out and chilled on a non-work day, and given that, in the end, we’re both not traditionalists and that felt like the better day to do the love thing than a busy Monday.  Here you go:

Lastly, I want to just say that Saturday’s Law of Attraction workshop here in Toronto kicked ass.  Period, paragraph.  I am so appreciative of those who attended, especially those who were generous enough to bring forward their personal challenges to be re-framed in an LoA perspective.  It feels like each workshop is better than the last, which only makes sense given the mantra of the Universe IS ‘more, more, more …’  Save The Date: March 19th is our next one.  Details and seat reservation here!

The Bride Is Flying High

I Will Not Be Wearing This.

A lone wolf by nature, I’m not one to chit-chat with my seat mates on airplanes, but this was not the case when I flew to Florida last week.  Upon check-in I was offered a seat by the emergency exist, and so, being a leggy bitch, I took that offer up, even though it meant not sitting with my fiance, Eddie.

Instead, I sat next to a big-boned black woman who reminded me of a shrink I once had.  She was having trouble fitting her straw carry-on bag underneath the seat in front of her, so I assisted by placing it into an overhead compartment and sat down.  From my own carry-on, I pulled out my reading material for the trip: Forbes, Architechtural Digest, The New Yorker, and Martha Stewart Weddings.

My seat-mate watched me open the wedding magazine, commenting: “Someone getting married?”

“Yes. I am,” I said, flipping past Vera Wang, Cartier, and Oscar de la Renta ads.

“Usually it’s the bride who buys those magazines,” she said.

“Exactly,” I said, not looking up from my Martha.  In my peripheral vision I could see her drink in the information. Continue Reading…

Two Things:

I’m really appreciating two things in my life right now.  Really appreciating.

1) Anyone who knows me or has read HIMBO! for a while knows of the little girl who has me wrapped around her paw, Ella, the Cocker Spaniel Eddie and I adopted from the local humane society when she was 6 months old.  She’s now 3.  They know that when we first got her, we couldn’t touch her without her attacking, she’d been beaten by previous owners to the point of not trusting hands or people all that much.  Still today she’s a tad wary of others.

But the other night Eddie was out, Jack the Daschund was sleeping across the room and Annie the cat was snoozing on a pillow and I was stretched out on the couch, texting with friends.  Ella hopped up by my side (she loves to curl up with me now).  But, for the first time ever, Continue Reading…
