Shaun-Proulx-ThoughtRevolution-Your-Mic-Is-Always-On

Last Sunday in Ottawa, speaking at the Refresh Your Passion Conference, I shared a story from a prior speaking gig. About a year ago, I went off-stage post-presentation and started to the green room, yakking with a producer, unaware that my mic – a headset – was still on. The sound person hadn’t turned it off.

RIGHT?

Everyone in the theatre could hear my private conversation. Thankfully, I said nothing I regretted saying to 2,000 people I didn’t know were listening in.

I shared that Sunday, and now, because it is important to understand we all have a mic, we all broadcast. All day, every day, our mic is on. Our thoughts, our words, our social media posts, emails, they are all broadcasts the Universe hears and responds to.

Whatever you’re broadcasting, you get more of. Your mic is always on. >Tweetable

So I’m especially proud of my friend Samantha, who sent me a text in the middle of the night this week, a part of which reads:

I realize this is super late. I am at XX Division. XX attacked me. Destroyed my condo, smashed my TV, all my belonging (sic). I’m so sorry I need to cancel tomorrow.

Samantha’s partner also destroyed her computer, which is her means of livelihood.

I’m proud of Samantha for many reasons: her strength, reaching within herself for self-love, her realization that she can’t change her partner, for her overall grace under horrifying circumstances.

I’m especially proud though because it would be so easy for her, mic on still, to go on and on about what happened. To give something she doesn’t want ever again more airtime. A delicate act for Samantha, of course, but one she seems determined to succeed at. Her determination should inspire us all.

The less airtime you give the reasons you don’t feel good, the less momentum you give the reasons you don’t feel good.

So Samantha isn’t about the reasons she isn’t feeling good.

She’s about reasons to feel good: where she’s going, where she wants to be.

Samantha knows she is a powerful focusing mechanism. Here is one example, a share on social media:

“It is time to start repairing myself. Now that this chapter in my life has come to a close, it is time to be strong and move forward.”

I marvel at Samantha. I’ve seen the bruises, the smashed walls, the destroyed electronics. Of course, she hasn’t been “Little Miss I Know My Mic Is On” 100% of the time. None of us can, especially not when or right after something so unwanted happens.

But, when you know your choice-point is now in all moments, and when you know you are a powerful focusing mechanism more than anything else you are, you know it would be utter foolishness to give airtime to unwanted things, small or big.

When the Kentucky same-sex couple who sued notorious, headline-making homophobe Kim Davis were recently married, they had just one rule for their guests: no one was to mention her, no one was to speak her name.

They understood, as Samantha does, as we all should, that we are transmitters and that the Universe always responds to our offering. They didn’t want their wedding day to include Kim Davis – so there was no mention of her allowed. Not even jokes at her expense, not even toasts to the folly of her.  The energy of her was kept at bay.

There is one question we must always ask ourselves:

Pretty (or whatever you call yourself): What are you giving airtime to? Is it wanted, or unwanted? What do you want more of? Less of? How do you want your life to unfold today? (Okay, that was more than one question and now you know I call myself Pretty when I talk to myself.)

The sound guy has left the building and isn’t coming back.

And your mic is on.

This just in: Another text in from Samantha. Her urgent computer issue has been 100% resolved by a generous company who heard about what happened to her.

That is the physical manifestation of her powerful focus on wanted.

Lump in throat as I type this. So great.
